Alexis Lafreniere is a generational talent and is considered a can’t miss prospect for the 2020 NHL Entry Draft. Quite a few people in the hockey industry have compared him to Sidney Crosby. Mainly because he scored 42 goals in his rookie QMJHL season as a 16 year old. Alexis followed up that campaign with a 105 point season in 2018-19 which saw him accumulate 68 assists. Lafreniere’s playmaking abilities really came to light this past season.
Alexis is trusted in all situations by his coaches. If you need a late push he is out there trying to dominate the play. Lafreniere’s ability to perform under pressure stands above the rest, he thrives the more pressure you lay on him, he wants the puck on his stick when it matters most. He is well liked by his teammates and coaches, and takes leadership proudly. Quebec has finally produced a french speaking future superstar.
Always three steps ahead
Alexis is like a chess player, he thinks the game three steps in advance. His high hockey intelligence and great vision make him a threat whenever he is on the ice. He wants the puck 0n his stick, he wants to dominate the game and he usually does. Plays best when carrying the puck on the rush, always a threat to score or make a brilliant play to set up a goal. Can drive a line by himself from the wing.
Lafreniere is confident and creative. He is a very powerful and balanced skater. Has excellent edge work and speed to burn. With his big body and creative moves he is very hard to knock off the puck. Protects the puck very well in high traffic areas and goes to the net with authority. He has exceptional hands and a deadly quick release. Alexis could use more work on his defensive zone coverage but does an adequate overall job of getting back on the back check.
Quote from Gretzky
“He reminds me of Gilbert Perreault,” NHL legend Wayne Gretzky said.
Alexis Lafreniere had this to say about himself recently.
“He played in Rimouski, and I did too. That’s something people say,” Lafrenière said. “But I’m not Crosby. I just try to be myself and play my game. If I can watch Crosby play and do things like he do, for sure I will do it to try to get better, but I don’t think I’m Crosby.”
And finally I leave you with this quote from his current coach of the Rimouski Oceanic.
“He’s our best player at 17 years old,” Beausoleil said. “At times, we’re really demanding because we love him. It’s good to see that he has something to learn. That’s a long process.”
